Two full-time positions available at the VA Montana Medical Center at Fort Harrison, MT. Tour of ! duty varies to include nights, weekends and holidays.

The VA Montana Health Care System provides a VA presence in every major city in the state through a series of community based clinics, a community living center, and an acute care medical center.
Fort Harrison (Helena) is a 48-bed acute care, medical-surgical facility that offers a broad range of acute, chronic, and specialized inpatient and outpatient services for both male and female veterans. Specialty care includes internal medicine, gerontology, neurology, dermatology, cardiology, palliative care, pain management, medical oncology, surgery (general, vascular, laparoscopic, endoscopic), urology, orthopedics, plastic, ophthalmology, ENT, podiatry, gynecology, chiropractic care, psyc! hiatry (including outpatient substance abuse treatment and PTS! D and MST specific care), and ambulatory care (primary care). Radiology Service provides a broad range of diagnostic and interventional care provided on a full time basis. Pathology Services are available on site also provided on a full time basis. Telemedicine services are available for psychiatry, radiology, gynecology, primary care, ophthalmology and tele-home health. The 24-bed inpatient mental health facility serves patients needing treatment for PTSD, Substance Abuse and Acute Care.
A 30-bed Community Living Center (CLC) that provides general and ventilator dependent care is located in Miles City. Primary care is provided at Anaconda, Billings, Bozeman, Cutbank, Glasgow, Glendive, Great Falls, Havre, Kalispell, Lewistown, Miles City, and Missoula. Primary Care Telehealth Outreach Clinics are located in Hamilton and Plentywood. Staff and contract specialists visit the clinics regularly and provide access to specialty care as needed.
Montana is the fou! rth largest state geographically and has one of the largest per capita veteran populations. To augment mental health services in the outbased clinics, VA Montana Health Care System contracted mental health care outside Lewis and Clark County (location of Fort Harrison) to reduce veteran travel. This allowed the VA to provide for local care while maximizing funding in rural areas without making the veteran travel.

The incumbent practices as a Float Pool Nursing Assistant (NA) on the Medical/Surgical/Behavioral Health/ICU/Emergency Department inpatient areas of VA Montana Medical Center. Certification preferred. The Float NA is responsible for the delivery of selected nursing activities to patients experiencing a variety of alterations in their physical, behavioral, acute and/or chronic psychiatric illnesses/substance dependency problems. This person will possess excellent communication and team building knowledge and skills. Basic Life Support (BLS) required for NAs per policy. This position requires flexibility in schedule and assignments, as this is a 24/7 hospital and a Float Pool Unit. As needs for cross-training are identified, orientation and checklist will be provided and completed.
Allied Nursing Functions: Defined as direct and indirect activities related to patient care as appropriately assigned by t! he RN. These activities are targeted to assisting the health care team.!
1. Adheres to VA and Nursing policies, procedures, and standards.
2. Delivers care to patients in a respectful, non-judgmental manner.
3. Maintains patient privacy/confidentiality and patient rights to privacy/confidentiality.
4. Sets limits within the Nursing Assistant/patient relationship, which are clearly defined.
5. Participates in selected Continuous Improvement (CI) activities as directed.
6. Assists with selected activities related to patient admission/transfer and discharge.
7. Collects patient information including observation of overall condition.
8. Recognizes and reports obvious changes in patient condition including emergencies.
9. Takes appropriate actions in response to patient emergent situations.
10. Accurately documents patient information in CPRS.
11. Provides patient information to the accountable RN for inclusion in the patientÂ's plan of care.
! 12. Completes assignment, reports to the accountable RN when assignment has been completed or when unable to complete activities.
13. Uses appropriate lifting/moving/transfer techniques/devices.
14. Utilizes infection control and universal standard precautions.
16. Adjusts to assignment changes.
17. Participates in the interdisciplinary team care planning and delivery of care process.
18. Assists in the implementation of the psychiatric treatment program as assigned.

x. Applies and provides routine care for a condom catheter.
y. Promotes skin healing through the application ! of noncomplex dressing changes and the
application of ostomy appliances as delegated by the accountable RN.
z. Offers physiological, psychological and spiritual comfort to the dying patient.
aa. Correctly uses specialized wheelchairs.
bb. Demonstrates the correct application of slings, splints and braces.
cc. Performs finger stick blood glucose using the blood glucose monitor.
dd. Monitors patients during meal time.
ee. Demonstrates/performs use of oximetry as directed.
ff. Recognizes safety risks related to dementia.
gg. Observes chest tubes.
hh. Monitors continuous bladder irrigations.
ii. Assists the nurse in the application of traction and supportive devices.
jj. Ambulates patient with/without assistive devices and provides passive range of motion as
directed by the RN.

ll. Admini! sters established enteral feedings and checks for residual.

pp. Appropriately uses protective and restraining devices.
qq. Assists in the initiation of seclusion/behavioral management as directed.
rr. Monitors those patients on safety checks/in seclusion/restraints, 1:1 observation.
ss. Demonstrates/performs use of oximetry as directed.
tt. Performs finger stick blood glucose using glucometer.

Preferred Experience: We are looking for nursing assistants with experience in a variety of hospital settings who is flexible and reliable. Nonprofessional nursing care work in hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as; personal nursing care; support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures; caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in behavior, and/or assisting physicians and registered nurses.

Additionally, six (6) months of specialized experien! ce equivalent to a GS-3 grade level in the federal service performing non-professional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home or other medical patient care facility, or as a home health aid. Examples of non-professional nursing care work include: 1) performing personal nursing acre duties; 2) support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures; 3) caring for mentally ill patients; 4) assisting surgeons or registered nurses in operating room activities.
