Perform a variety of specimen collection techniques from patients in patient service centers, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living locations, and client’s facilities. Additional duties specific to a location may include: ! reception, collection of billing information, specimen processing and client and customer service duties. A phlebotomist maintains a professional relationship with patients, clients and peers. Performs all tasks in accordance with the Company’s safety and compliance programs.Pre-analytical processing of medical specimens. Preparation of specimens for testing through the following: sorting, coding, inputting, labeling, swapping, receiving, CVISing, manifesting, and filing. The position includes several additional duties, such as specimen retrieval, SHMC send-outs, network account check-in, etc. Accurate performance of these duties is vital to the beginning step in the laboratory process and must be maintained at all times.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Performs a variety of routine blood drawing procedures, to include venipuncture and capillary techniques, using standard equipment such as vacutainer tubes and sleeves, tourn! iquets, syringes and butterfly needles.
- Facilitates t! he unobserved collection of urine specimens
- Greets patients. Interacts directly with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.
- To adhere to the National Patient Safety Goals: “of improving the accuracy of patient identification by requiring :
o use two identifiers to label sample collection containers in the presence of the patient.
- Completes test requisition to include patient demographics , accurate required billing information, and transcription of client test orders.
- Centrifuges blood specimens as necessary to maintain specimen integrity
- Processes, labels, and stores specimen samples for subsequent analysis.
- Maintains inventory of supplies, reordering as required; stocks supplies on! carts and hand trays.
- Performs various quality control procedures to maintain compliance with internal and external regulations.
- Operates Laboratory Information System (LIS) for entry of patient demographics, test orders, billing information.
- Frequently uses office equipment including telephone, computer, fax, etc. Perform telephone and other clerical duties.
- Maintains a safe and sanitary work environment. Perform light cleaning of work area.
- May Perform specialized collection to include breath alcohol testing and hair collection.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
- Occasionally delivers specimens between locations.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High School Diploma or equivalent
2. Ability to learn basic medical terminology
3. Accurate and efficient typing skills (35 WPM minimum)
4. Ability to work with accuracy and speed in a team oriented! effort while paying close attention to detail
Work Conditi! ons:
1. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
2. Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases and therefore require the use of “personal protective equipmentâ€.
3. Exposure to specimens, odorous chemicals, toxic chemical agents, (high use of bleach & dry ice)
4. Potential contamination from handling of specimens
5. Potential exposure to contaminated biological specimens
6. May not eat or drink in laboratory areas due to the possible presence of blood-borne pathogens
Desired Qualifications:
1. College-level science background
2. 10-key experience
3. Specimen processing experience
4. Phlebotomy skills
5. Willingness to be flexible with hours scheduled
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or GED.
At least 1 year of recent, directly related experience to include 3 months practicum gained in a clinical, hospital, or laboratory setting.
OR
Phlebotomy Certifica! tion by an accredited agency, completion of an approved phlebotomy training course, MLT (ASCP) Certificate, or LPN/RN Licensure. Must meet all state and local requirements.

- Work is performed in a medical or clinical office setting or nursing home environment.
- Moderate physical activity. May require physical effort including lifting up to 50 pounds and some extended periods of standing or walking.
- Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases and therefore require the use of personal protective equipment. Exposure to odorous chemicals and specimens.
- Contact with patients in a wide variety of circumstances. Work independently, sometimes alone. Travel may be required.
