The foremost professional responsibility of the pharmacist is to provide pharmaceutical care: identifying, assessing and solving medication problems. This includes promoting safe, efficacious a! nd cost-effective medication therapy. The pharmacist is responsible for providing physician, staff and family (caregivers) with drug information. The pharmacist organizes and directs work to meet the patients' medication needs and in doing such, is responsible for processing all prescriptions, maintaining appropriate records, distributing and controlling all pharmaceuticals. Pharmacists are responsible for the supervision of pharmacy technicians and pharmacy support personnel.
Job Duties

Reviews prescriptions issued by physicians or other authorized prescribers to assure accuracy and determines formulas and ingredients needed.
Compounds medications using standard formulas and processes, such as weighing, measuring and mixing ingredients.
Monitors all posting onto the patient profiles in order that accuracy, drug allergies, drug interactions, duplicate therapy, rational drug therapy and incompatibilities may b! e realized and better patient care received.
Checks p! atient medication cassettes prior to delivery to patient care areas to ascertain that the correct drug, dosage form, schedule and strength is being dispensed.
Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
Prepares IV admixtures and extemporaneous parenteral products under aseptic conditions.
Directs Pharmacy Department personnel engaged in admixing, packaging and labeling pharmaceuticals.
Answers questions and provides information to physicians, nurses, patients and other healthcare professionals on the appropriate use of medications, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, storage, etc.
Assists in teaching programs (departmental, medical, nursing, community).
Endorses policies and procedures of the department and of the hospital.
Ensures the maintenance and proper operation of equipment and supplies in the work are! as.
Maintains established procedures concerning quality control, security of controlled substances and disposal of hazardous waste.
Enters data into the computer system (Pharmacy program), such as patient, prescribed medications and cost, and maintains patient profiles and charge system.
Instructs students and other medical personnel on matters pertaining to the Pharmacy Department.
Reviews and monitors drug therapy that requires dosing adjustments as authorized by the physician.
Provides pharmaceutical care to all ages of patients from newborns to the elderly. Understands that there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adult and geriatric patients, and knows where to find appropriate information.
Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Identifies and addresses psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs of patients and their families.
Assists the Pharmacy Direc! tor on special assignments.
Supervises at least one to two (12! ) members of the Pharmacy Department staff on a daily basis as needed per license allows as well as state and federal laws & regulations.
Assists the Pharmacy Director with responsibilities in accordance with the organizations mission, policy and any applicable laws.
Interviews and assists in the hiring process, trains personnel, plans, assigns and directs work, addresses complaints and resolves problems as/if needed or assigned.
Demonstrates ability to read, analyze and interpret pharmacyrelated journals.
Demonstrates ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the hospital staff.
Demonstrates ability to write articles for publication and ability to effectively present information to management, medical staff, hospital staff and public groups.
Demonstrates ability to apply advanced mathematical concepts and operations to such tasks as dosage calculations, formul! ation of pharmaceutical preparations, data analysis, and any such mathematics relating to the practice of pharmacy.
Demonstrates ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Demonstrates ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract variables.
Compounded Sterile Preparations:
Assures the availability of adequate equipment to safely prepare compounded sterile preparations.
Ensures that pharmaceutical preparations are sterile, properly packaged, labeled and stored, and not outdated.
Certifies the skills of the compounding staff.
Maintains air quality check records.
Ensures compliance with USP .
Lowrisk compounding:
The applicable mediafill test will be performed and passed annually, after the initial training and mediafill test is completed and passed.
Mediumrisk compounding:
The ! applicable mediafill test will be performed and passed annually, after ! the initial training and mediafill test is completed and passed.
Highrisk compounding:
The applicable mediafill test will be performed and passed semiannually, after the initial training and mediafill test is completed and passed.

Education/Experience Requirements
Licensure or eligibility for licensure as a pharmacist in Montana.
Montana Licensure must be obtained by Augus! t 15th of the residency year.
Pharm.D. degree, with Residency,! from an accredited school of pharmacy.
Language Skills
Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Other Skills
Basic computer knowledge, data entry and/or word processing.
Automated pharmacy systems, typewriters, IV Laminar Flow Hood or the willingness to learn.
