The Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) is an academic support unit within the Office for Student Success. The UAC, located in the Lommasson Center, is the advising home for all undeclared/general studies, Freshman Business, Pre-Psychology, Pre-Communication Studies, Pre-Nursing and undergraduate non-degree students. The mission of the UAC is to provide comprehensive academic advising and related programming supporting the academic success of students. Measures of! success include timely identification of majors reflective of! the student’s interests and strengths as well as retention and degree completion. The advisor guides the student through the self-discovery process while promoting intellectual growth and the acquisition of sound decision making skills. The Undergraduate Advising Center also provides assistance to students campus-wide regarding general education and University requirements, registration support, major selection and declaration, academic petitions, and graduation papers.

This position works collaboratively with student support offices, coordinates advising services to students participating in one or more programs that adhere to sets of rules and requirements beyond those that apply to the traditional UM policies; serves as the advisor of record for UAC students in the following populations: international students, Disability Services for Students, Veteran’s Education and Transition Services, and American Indian Student Services; provides outreach and serves as! a resource to other campus programs as appropriate; works collaboratively as part of the UAC team, including brainstorming and problem-solving on developing and modifying strategies, timelines, techniques and methods for new and existing advising scenarios; and provides back-up support for the reception area as needed.

All professional staff members in the UAC carry a caseload of undeclared/general studies and pre-major students and serve as the primary academic advisor from the point of entry until the student formally declares an academic major. Developmental advising strategies are the primary mode of advising, supplemented by intrusive or other advising methods as appropriate. In addition, all professional staff members contribute to the success of the UAC Peer Program.

This position requires incumbent to develop proficient knowledge of UM academic policies and procedures; working knowledge of university catalog, resources and general education requir! ements; working knowledge of current advising practices and FERPA regul! ations; advanced experience using Microsoft Office Suite of products and Banner Student Information System; working knowledge of curriculum development principles and researching national trends in retaining at-risk student populations through advising interventions; and experience with multi-lingual students and sensitivity to multi-cultural issues.

Required Skills

Excellent verbal, written, and listening communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills

Understanding of student development theory

Must have the ability to work with students, oftentimes with difficult and complex situations

Ability to provide sound judgement in assessing student need and determining an appropriate plan of action

Knowledgeable in current advising practices and research with the ability to research and implement changes

Ability to work effectively as part of a team and to collaborate with UAC employees

Ability to es! tablish rapport, facilitate academic decision making, make appropriate referrals, and monitor academic progress

Knowledge of the features of college student success and persistence literature

Supervisory skills and experience with providing personnel evaluation

Ability to establish effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff

Ability to gather, evaluate, assess, and report data

Experience with personal computers

Knowledge of, or ability to learn, Microsoft Office Suite of products and Banner Student Information System

Ability to manage stressful and difficult situations and conflict while maintaining composure

Ability to facilitate awareness of diversity issues and their impact on student performance to UAC and broader university community

Required Experience

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and a minimum of two (2) years of experience providing comprehensive! advising at the college level or an equivalent combination of educatio! n and experience.
