The Lewistown Infirmary houses inmates from Montana State Prison who require nursing care. The Infirmary provides a high degree of security to ensure the safety of the community and other residents and employees on the facility’s campus. The management of the unit is collaboration between the Departme! nt of Health and Human Services and the Department of Corrections. This position provides case management and oversees recreational activities for 25 inmates from the Montana State Prison. Key responsibilities include: 1) Counsels inmates to assist with psychosocial needs, behavior management and crisis intervention; 2) Collaborates with nurses and correctional officers to plan safety approved recreational activities for inmates; and 3) Assigns inmates to jobs and evaluates their work performance.

Duties:
A. Assessment and Case Management
Interviews inmates, and determines appropriate services for inmates
Counsels inmates to assist with psychosocial needs, behavior management, and crisis intervention.
Advocates for inmates' basic needs and rights. Participates in Care Plan meetings; assists with developing individua! l inmate care plans.
Monitors inmate's care plan
Investigates grievances.
Analyzes case records to make recommendations for potential community placement.
B. Recreation
Collaborates with nurses and correctional officers to plan approved activities.
Develops recreational activities based on inmate's physical abilities .
Conducts recreational activities such as fitness and gardening projects.
Observes and documents inmate’s participation, activity skills, and progress.
Organizes and promotes interest in recreational activities.
Schedules recreational activities and order supplies.
C. Inmate Work Program
Assigns inmates to jobs and evaluates their work performance.
Reviews and submits inmates’ timesheets to payroll.
Determines rates of pay based on predetermined pay schedule.
Competencies:
Required for the first day of work:
Knowledge of social work principles and practices.
Knowledg! e of behavior management, individual and group counseling.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to establish good working relations with staff, inmates, and families.
Ability to plan, organize, and modify recreational activities as necessary.
Ability to operate a personal computer and general office equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, including using a spreadsheet, word processing, database, email, internet and other computer programs.
Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or a closely related field.
- One year of social services work experience or directly-related work-experience working with families in difficult and sometimes volatile situations.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
