This position will serve as a Surgical Technician (ST) and is a member for the surgical team at the VA Montana Health Care System, Fort Harrison, MT. You will provide ! assistance to the surgeon and other team members during surgical procedures. You will participate with the surgical team members in implementing complex procedures under the general supervision of the surgical team. Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Functions as a primary scrub person responsible for handling instruments, supplies, and equipment during all surgical procedures such as major and minor vascular, ophthalmology, ENT, GYN, major and minor orthopedic, urology, and general surgeries.
Sets up sterile field with all required items for each procedure such as air-powered equipment, fiber optic equipment, urologic equipment, recording devices, endoscopy equipment, and other operating room supplies and equipment.
Plans and discusses each procedure with surgical professionals and assures that all supplies and equipment are available prior to the surgical procedure.
Observes and responds to each stage of the ! surgical procedure and the needs of the surgeon by maintaining a high l! evel of concentration of extended periods of time.
Assists the team members with care of the patient, i.e., positioning, prepping, and obtaining supplies.
Utilizes universal precautions and follow all infection control policies and procedures when handling specimens, supplies, and equipment.
Performs non-technical maintenance of equipment to prevent malfunctions.
Assesses equipment needs and maintains adequate stock of supplies and materials.
DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position.
Specialized Experience: Must possess one (1) year of specialized e xperience equipped with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the Surgical Technician position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least GS-5 grade level. Examples of specialized experience include: working experience in an operating room handling surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgery including providing assistance to a surgeon during a variety of surgical procedures or assisting as a scrub person; setting up sterile fields with r! equired items for each procedure such as air-powered equipment, fiber-o! ptic equipment, endoscopy equipment, urologic equipment; handling surgical specimens appropriately; performing or assisting in training of residents, medical or nursing students and new operating room staff in the operations of equipment, sterile techniques, handling of instruments or procedures. NOTE: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Education: MUST have successfully completed 6 months of graduate level education or an internship. Graduate education must be directly related to the position to be creditable. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)

Combining Education and Experience: Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate education and specialized experience may be used to meet total experience requirements. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED)
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
Knowledge of aseptic techniques and the principles of practices.
Knowledge of basic patient care procedures and provide scrub assistance in surgery suite.
Knowledge and care of surgical instrumentation and maintenance.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. Requires regular and recurring bending, lifting,stooping, stretching, lifting, and repositioning patients, or similar activities.The physical demands involve long, str! enuous hours of standing, stooping, bending, and stretching without a b! reak during procedures,which requires intense concentration. The work also involves frequent lifting to position or transport handicapped or anesthesized patients, and requires strenuous physical exertion and agility.
