Fort Harrison (Helena) is a 48-bed acute care, medical-surgical facility that offers a broad range of acute, chronic, and specialized inpatient and outpatient services for both male and female veterans. Specialty care includes internal medicine, gerontology, neurology, dermatology, cardiology, palliative care, pain management, medical oncology, surgery (general, vascular, laparoscopic, endoscopic), urology, orthopedics, plastic, ophthalmology, ENT, podiatry, gynecology, chiropractic care, psychiatry (including outpatient substance abuse treatment and PTSD and MST specific care), and ambulatory care (primary care). Radiology Service provides a broad range of diagnostic and interventional care provided on a full time basis. Pathology Services are available on site also provided on a full time basis. Telemed! icine services are available for psychiatry, radiology, gyneco! logy, primary care, ophthalmology and tele-home health. The 24-bed inpatient mental health facility serves patients needing treatment for PTSD, Substance Abuse and Acute Care.

Must be proficient in written and spoken English DUTIES:
The Chemotherapy/Therapeutic Infusion Nurse is responsible and accountable for the practice that encompasses the roles of direct caregiver, educator, and serving veterans who are treated in or require diagnostic procedures in the Hematology/Oncology Clinic. Elements of this practice include prevention and education of patients, family members! and caregivers, assessment, diagnostic testing (early detection), trea! tment plans, follow-up appointments, pain management, coordination of services and collaboration with providers, rehabilitation, and end of life care. This individual provides needed assistance and consultation for Hematology/Oncology Department. The Hematology/Oncology Nurse possesses the knowledge and skills to effectively and collaboratively apply all aspects of the nursing process within the area of assignment.

Role responsibilities and accountabilities also include demonstration of the knowledge and skills necessary to assess the care appropriate to the age related needs of patients served in the Medical Center . This knowledge includes understanding changes associated with aging and principles of growth and development relevant to the adult and geriatric population.

This Registered Nurse is also responsible and accountable for maintaining Basic Life Support (BLS).

The Hematology/Oncology Registered Nurse functions and responsibilities includ! e the following:

  • Adhering to established policies, standards of care, and standards of practice is consistent with the plan of other health care providers.
  • Coordinating and facilitating the provision of clinical and psychosocial services in a setting best suited to the services and to the health care needs of assigned patients.
  • Working collaboratively with the patient, family/significant other, and members of the interdisciplinary team to implement a plan of care across the continuum to meet each patientÂ's individual needs and maintain or improve quality of life.
  • Promoting strategies that contribute to the effective and efficient use of Medical Center and VISN resources.
  • Enhancing patient satisfaction and patient advocacy.
  • Providing consultation to other health care providers, disciplines, and departments, i.e. Home Health/Hospice for timely management of care for patients.
  • Collecting, analyzing, and s! haring of data and information in order to influence performance improv! ement goals.
  • Providing leadership in the application of the nursing process to client care, organizational processes, and/or system in order to improve outcomes at the service, or organizational level.
  • Serving as a liaison to the patient, his/her family, and members of the multidisciplinary team and hospital systems, to facilitate the management of patient-centered care.
  • Assuming the role of educating staff to meet changing program or service needs and consulting regarding issues such as skin and wound care, pain management, care planning, policy interpretation and others .
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
U.S. citizenship. Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required

Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediti! ng agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commo! nwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Co! lumbia.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

The criteria are as follows:
Practice: practice, ethics and resource utilization;

Professional Development: performance, education/career development;

Collaboration; collaboration, collegiality;

Scientific Inquiry: quality of care, research.

Physical Requirements: Moderate lifting (15-44 lbs), moderate carrying (15-44 lbs), straight pulling, pushing, reaching above shoulder, use of fingers, both hands required, walking, standing, repeated ! bending, both legs required, ability for rapid mental and muscular coor! dination simultaneously, near vision correctable at 13" to 18" Jaeger 1-4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors, hearing (aid permitted), emotional stability, mental stability, sitting 3-4 hours intermittently, hand & eye coordination, and twisting.
