Special Information:
This is the only designated medical position at this facility; other staff is trained in basic First Aid techniques and responses. This position is ultimately responsible for all medical decisions affecting the trainee population at TSCTC and has the responsibility of deciding the necessity of trainees seeing physician and dentist.

Duties:
Prescreens offender’s medical status by reviewing the medical files at the MSP Infirmary and consulting with the infirmary medical staff prior to the offender being screened and transferred to the TSCTC facility. Completes medical examination/evaluation of each trainee upon arrival at TSCTC; evaluate! s the medical information to determine any physical, health or mental diagnosis that may jeopardize the trainees’ involvement in the program. Develops nursing diagnosis and treatment recommendations using assessment results and knowledge of theories, medical conditions and complications, principles and practices of nursing, interpersonal relations, and human growth and development. Notifies appropriate staff with specific medical instructions if medical information is revealed which may jeopardize the trainees’ performance in the program. Assesses medical complaints in daily sick call throughout the facility and renders medical aid as necessary. Responds to medical emergencies/crises. Provides discharge classification information to maintain trainee eligibility.
Administers treatment to the trainees as ordered by physician, including drawing blood, and submitting the specific sample to a medical lab for testing. Conducts confidential HIV and Hepatitis counselin! g and screening with the trainees to convey information and allow them ! to express their concerns. Educates trainees on diseases/disease treatment and effectively communicates complicated health information in a manner that the offender population understands.
Secures, inventories, controls, sorts and packages medication according to policy and procedure to ensure proper medication is being dispensed to the trainees and assure sufficient stock is on hand to meet all medical needs of the facility. Dispenses oral medication and prescriptions in a safe and efficient manner; prepares and administers hypodermic injections in compliance with physician’s procedures and instructions; documents the dispensation of medication.

Education/Experience:
A college degree in Registered Nursing and licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Montana is required. May consider a training assignment for an individual who is working toward obtaining their RN license within 18 months.
