You will be subject to a background/suitability investigation. DUTIES:
The Medical Supply Technician is part of the Supply,
Processing & Distribution Section (SPD) of Acquisition & Material
Management Service, located! at the VA Montana Health Care Service, Billings, MT.
The section is comprised of three main areas of responsibility, and employees
perform all duties in all three areas. Duties include but are not limited to:

Perform duties in medical supply, processing, and
distribution;
·
Collect reusable medical and surgical supplies,
instruments and equipment from various hospital wards/clinics and the operating
room;
·
Decontaminate the full range of reusable medical
and surgical supplies, instruments and equipment;
·
Disassemble and inspect medical supplies,
instruments and equipment for wear and tear, damage or missing components;
·
Remove gross contamination by selecting the
appropriate method and/or technique;
·
Operate steam cleaners, ultrasonic cleaning
equipment, automated endoscope reprocessing centers, and washers/decontaminators;
·
Reassemble complex medical equipment after cleaning;
·
Prepare the full range of trays and sets used o! n
the wards, in the clinics and in the operating room;
·
Maintain the inventory of medical supplies and
equipment; remove outdated materials; receive and store shipments of supplies;
rotate stock;
·
Practical knowledge of microbiology, human anatomy
and physiology, and medical and surgical procedures to understand supply
requirements;
·
Perform other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm

REQUIRES: One (1) year of specialized experience that
equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform
successfully the duties of this position. To be creditable, specialized
experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade of
Federal service. Examples of specialized experience may include: processing,
assemb! ling, trouble-shooting, preparing, sterilizing, storing, and issuing
sterile and unsterile medical supplies and equipment; knowledge of the
technical names, general uses, physical characteristics, and operating
conditions of medical supply items; knowledge of decontamination, cleaning,
preparation, sterilization, and storage procedures; knowledge of aseptic
techniques; and skill in operating a washer-sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument
cleaners, gas and steam sterilizers. Examples of prior qualifying specialized
experience may include work as an operating room technician, medical instrument
technician, nursing assistant, corpsman, or laboratory worker. To receive
credit for these skills they must be documented in your resume.
OR
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION: A bachelor's
degree or four (4) years of successfully completed education above the high
school level with courses related to the field for which high scho! ol graduation
or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite may be u! sed in place of
experience. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business,
secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university. One
year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter
hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of
classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business,
secretarial, or technical school. If you are using education to qualify,
transcripts are required.
OR
GS-05 COMBINATION: A combination of
specialized experience and successfully completed post high-school education
that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of the position is fully
qualifying at the GS-05 grade level, but only the semester hours in excess of
the first 60 semester hours can be used in place of experience. To qualify by a
combination, the total qualifying experience will be calculated as ! a percentage
of the experience required for the grade level; and the education will be
calculated as a percentage of the education required for the grade level. These
two percentages will be added, and the total percentages must equal at least
100 percent. If you are using a combination to qualify, your skills must be
documented in your resume and transcripts are required.
You will be rated on the following Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other characteristics (KSAOs) as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position:
1. Knowledge of technical medical equipment,
therapeutic and diagnostic apparatuses of material.
2. Knowledge of microbiology and aseptic principles
in order to implement infection control policies.
3. Ability to differentiate between various
medical, dental and surgical instruments and devices encountered in a hospital.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The work required regular! and recurring physical
exertion such as standing for prolonged per! iods of time, carrying medical
supply items weighing up to 50 pounds, frequent bending and
stretching/reaching, and pushing fully-loaded medical supply carts weighing as
much as 750 pounds which must be negotiated up inclines and over rises, or positioning
them on sterilizer track rails. The work requires dexterity in such tasks as
inserting small rods into needle openings or precisely aligning component parts
while reassembling medical equipment. Tension and stress are induced by the
critical nature of producing work results critical to patient care on
pre-established time frames and in emergent situations. Workdays can be
lengthened without notice by emergency surgery instrumentation needs.
